 President's Editorial

President's welcome

Dear members and friends of PWI,
The last 3 months since the election of the new board have been exceedingly busy for all of us getting the new board and the new executive team up and running. If you don’t know all of us yet, you can discover the team here.
I want to take this opportunity to thank Odile Flament. She has been elected as our new treasurer last May. Her start-up is picking up, she needs to spend every single minute on it. Unfortunately for us she had to step back from her role. We wish her a lot of success in this new adventure....[more]

PWI mentoring Program Launch

What is PWI Mentoring?
Mentoring is a relationship that is created to share knowledge and experience for learning in a purposeful way.
Mentoring is a voluntary, ‘not for profit’ relationship, a developmental partnership between two individuals who each take a defined role: The Mentor is a person with relevant knowledge, skills and experience, while the Mentee is a person who wants to learn from the mentor for her personal ...[ more]

Case Study : Diversity Management at Danone

The first “AXA Wo_Men@Work Award” was bestowed to Albert Ragon, General Manager of Danone Belgium. As you might know, this award goes to managers of companies, champions in promoting a fair gender balance within their company in Belgium.
Since “equality” is on the PWI Brussels agenda, we went and talked with Mr. Ragon to know more about how Danone manages diversity and equality.
By receiving  the AXA Award, Danone has been publicly recognized as a company [more]

Data protection in the digital age – why should you care?

Are you a member of a social networking site? Do you have a loyalty card? Are you paying by credit card? Are you shopping online? These are just a few examples in your daily life when you are sharing personal data with others, such as your e-mail address, birth date or credit card data.

But do you really have control over your personal data? Do you know who has access to your personal data? Do you know how others are using your personal data? And what about those photos of yourself that a friend... [more]

PWI – What is the UNIZO “KMO Adviesraad” corporate governance project and what is your role within?
Ms. Binnemans – UNIZO turned to my company - Experts@Business - for support in their new corporate governance project (called KMO Adviesraad) addressed to small/medium enterprises (SMEs not quoted in the Stock Exchange). How to get good financial advice.

In these somewhat uncertain times it is vital to make the best financial decisions for your future.
Many of us have  complex financial lives as we have worked in, and have connections to, more than one  country.  We need to make informed financial decisions to take full advantage of the opportunities that this can afford.  By informed, I mean making the most of what is available – for example, tax credits for personal and company pensions, tax efficient savings and investments – but also taking the time to work out what are your financial objectives.  ...[more]

Labour Market

Lobbying is a matter of “how” …

PWI – The term “lobbyist” has been traced to the mid-seventeenth century, when citizens would gather in a large lobby near the English House of Commons to express their views to members of Parliament. Can you please define - for people who are unfamiliar with the term - what is “lobbying” nowadays?
Mrs.Melia – I would say that “lobbying” is a specific trade, which allows you to position your messages, influence decision-makers and maximize your impact. Lobbying puts you in a position to advocate a defined interest that is affected, actually or potentially, by the decisions of governments and, in the case of Brussels...[more]

Crowdsourcing in action: How to get 200 proposals in 10 days

Crowdsourcing is a new term that literally means ‘outsourcing tasks to a crowd’. A crowd is a large and diverse group of people, which converges to a website to offer their services, or to participate in a collective enterprise. You will tap into that collectivity to request that they achieve a certain goal. The participants will expect a reward: it can be paying for the work or a prize where only the best wins the award.  Participants may even do it for free, just for the recognition.
Having established my company not long ago, and still needing a good logo for it, I contacted  ...[more]

“Untitled”, an interview with artist Elfriede de Rooster

PWI – When and why did you decide to become an artist?
Elfriede – I have always been involved with art, it has been a thread running through my whole life.  In college I studied art, and specialised in publicity.  I worked for several studio’s in Belgium amongst them Studio Peyo (smurfs cartoons) where I truly learned how to construct characters.  The knowledge acquired during that time, and the dedication to honing my skills even more during my free time led me to a job working for a major  [more]

PWI lunch with Monika Kuschewsky: Data Protection: How it might affect your business – 24 May 2011

Monika spoke about a range of issues related to data protection from both a professional and personal perspective.  She talked of her concerns about social networking sites and about giving your consent to have this information made public.  She particularly addressed the issue around the use of these sites by teenagers and how it can cause problems in later life when future employers subsequently have access to this information.  Monika was also concerned about how much information you give away by using credit cards and how this information can be mis-used.  Dealing with companies based outside of Europe/North America is also a challenge...[more] Summer 2011

What the Hell is Creativity, this abused word?

So what the hell is creativity, this abused word? My gut feeling says that, taking it to extremes, it is the ability to make others believe in somebody, in something said, done, designed, discovered, composed or produced… it does not really matter in what form/shape creativity appears. It is not even necessary that everybody defines it as creative. Creativity might be - from a different perspective - .Click here

Does Your Power Style Support Your Job Search?

There's nothing like the feeling of powerlessness that comes over people when a job they really wanted slips through their fingers. The tough questions begin when hardworking professionals with great networking skills find themselves watching people with less impressive track records scoop up the jobs they crave. Baffled by this turn of events, people often begin asking themselves questions like, "Why them and not me? What do they have that I don't have?"  ....: Click here

Lack of Women on Corporate Boards: The Problem or A Symptom?

Britain is inching toward following other countries (including France, Spain, and Norway) in introducing compulsory quotas for the number of women on corporate boards.  There is no doubt that in boardrooms around the world, women are in short supply.  Clearly – and unfortunately – gender equality is still a long way off, and there is only slow progress toward achieving it.....: Click here

When Will Women Become Equal On Boards?

“Some women choose to follow men, and some women choose to follow their dreams. If you’re wondering which way to go, remember that your career will never wake up and tell you that it doesn’t love you anymore.” — Lady Gaga
Those words may not hold true for a woman dreaming about becoming a corporate director.
